Kept Day by Day: How Jesus Carries Us

Inspiration · November 9, 2026 · By Richard Adebayo

Israel tried to save some manna for tomorrow, and by morning it was crawling. Some lessons God teaches only in the present tense: mercy, it turns out, has a use-by date of today.

I think of this every time someone tells me they are “running on empty.” Usually they mean they used up Monday’s strength on Sunday night, worrying about Friday. Jesus’ remedy is almost offensively simple: give us this day our daily bread — not this month, not this year. This day.

To the Uttermost, One Morning at a Time

The old phrase “to the uttermost” sounds like a heroic once-for-all rescue. Read Hebrews slowly and it is quieter than that: He keeps us the way the tide keeps the shore — returning, returning, returning. No dramatic arrival, just a faithfulness so regular we forget to be amazed by it.

“Stop asking God for a year’s supply of strength. Ask Him for breakfast — He has never missed a delivery.”

A Practice for This Week

Each morning before the phone, pray one sentence: “Lord, keep me today.” Then watch. Believers who try this for a fortnight report the same strange discovery — the days do not get easier, but they stop arriving empty-handed. The keeping was always there; the asking simply opened our eyes to it.

And when tomorrow’s worry knocks tonight, answer with yesterday’s mercy. That is how Jesus keeps us, day by day, to the uttermost.
