Standing Firm When the World Shakes
Missions · November 24, 2026 · By Aaron Whitfield
There is a church I think about whenever my own troubles start to feel large. It meets in a borrowed basement, sings barely above a whisper, and counts every baptism as a miracle worth risking everything for.
Last month our mission partners wrote to tell us of three new believers — and of the night their meeting place was searched. They asked us, of all things, to pray that they would remain joyful. Not safe. Joyful.
Pain Does Not Get the Last Word
We often treat suffering as evidence that something has gone wrong with our faith. The basement church treats it as the normal climate in which faith grows. “Becoming unshakable,” their pastor wrote, “does not mean the shaking stops. It means you learn what cannot be shaken.”
“We do not pray for lighter loads. We pray for stronger backs — and for the joy that makes heavy loads feel light.”
What This Means for Cedarfold
Most of us will never worship in a basement. But every one of us knows a smaller shaking: the diagnosis, the redundancy letter, the child who stops calling. The question is the same one our partners ask — will we let pain make our world smaller, or our God bigger?
This Advent, a tenth of every gift to Cedarfold Chapel goes directly to our partners abroad — for Bibles, for training, for families who lost breadwinners. And every Wednesday in December, the chapel stays open from noon to two for anyone who wants to pray for the suffering church. Come and stand firm with them.
